Have you ever had an accident while climbing?

Postby Shine_Spirit » Thu Mar 02, 2017 6:49 am

Accidents are recurrent in any sport. In some sports they usually happen more often, and in others less often (but they happen).

I've never been in any particular accident, but unfortunately I've had the opportunity to witness one of my friends in this situation. It was a very desperate situation because at the time I felt very impotent. His rope broke and he fell. The luck was that the height was small, and he suffered only minor injuries.

Fortunately it did not a turn big, but I saw one few years back.
We were a small team. It was raining. But, as the plan was scheduled beforehand, we thought to continue even in drizzle. Hilly terrains become particularly difficult to climb in such weathers. After climbing some height, one of us skidded and fall. The tracking shoes could not get a hold on slippery mud and the fellow continued to skid down before getting stuck to a root finally. This saved him from having a bigger fall.

That's a narrow escape! I am very lucky not to have been in any accidents while climbing as I can't imagine any hinderance that could blow away my pleasure and determination of climbing.

As others have already said, climbing just like any activity can be dangerous and some more experienced climbers have even said that it's the danger that's involved that makes it all the more exciting. From a personal point of view though, I have never had any form of accident while I have been out and about but I have seen some things that have made me realise just how dangerous climbing can be.

I think that anybody who gets involved in these kind of sports knows the amount of risks that they are taking, and while I wouldn't say it's the danger side of things that make them appealing like the professional climbers say, I do think that we get a sense of satisfaction from knowing that we have conquered certain climbs and come back unscathed.

I have never had any real accident in any of my climbing activities but I had a very strange experience during one. It suddenly started raining hard when one of my coworker and me coming down from Tiffin Top in Nainital by a shortcut and the muddy path that we were walking on was flooded heavily and there was no other way where we could move. We managed to climb back few hundred meters and found a shepherd's hut. The lady in the hut gave us some tea and helped us stay warm by lighting her muddy fireplace. We stayed there for 5-6 hours and came back to our hotel room when it stopped raining.

I'm glad to say that I didn't have any sad experience in climbing expeditions. But a close friend had a mishap when he had miscalculated a descent with the rappel and his body had swung a bit that he hit the steep wall. He suffered a problem with his spines (not sure of the exact medical term). He was in a body brace for some months and fortunately there was no surgery required. He quit climbing because of that accident.

Worked in a gym for about 5 years and climbed in a gym maybe 3 times a week for an additional 3 and I never really saw any but heard about some really bad ones .The gym I worked at didn't really have any.The one at school and the one I climbed at after college didn't have any that I knew of but for all I know they could have kept it somewhat quiet and though a member I wasn't that tuned/plugged in to the gym I climbed at after college. I wanna say the worst besides occasional sprained ankle from landing weird was suffered by me being a idiot. When it was late at night, maybe an hour from closing we identified a hold that was a "Spinner" so I grabbed the wrench and climbed up and started tightening, I got it tightened and threw the wrench out of my crash area and when down climbing I located another spinner at maybe 22 feet, when I located it and I fell and despite landing on the crushed rubber I also landed on my tailbone. This was I would say the worse injury I've ever had
